Haldi
Definition
The Haldi ceremony is a pre-wedding ritual in which a paste made primarily of turmeric (haldi), often mixed with sandalwood, rosewater, milk, or oil, is applied to the skin of the bride and groom by family members. Held separately at each of their homes (or sometimes jointly) on the morning of or shortly before the wedding, the ceremony is intended to bless the couple, purify and brighten their skin, and ward off ill fortune. Turmeric's antiseptic and beautifying properties give the ritual both ceremonial and practical significance.
Understanding Haldi
Turmeric holds a revered place in Indian culture as an auspicious, purifying, and medicinal substance, and the Haldi ceremony channels these associations into the wedding preparations. Relatives take turns applying the yellow paste to the couple's face, arms, hands, and feet, accompanied by singing, laughter, and often playful smearing.
