Mehendi (Mehndi)

Henna, derived from the Lawsonia inermis plant, has been used decoratively across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa for centuries. In the Indian wedding context, the application of mehendi to the bride is a beloved ritual usually held a day or two before the wedding, frequently alongside the Sangeet.

A professional henna artist (or several, for large gatherings) applies elaborate patterns that can include paisleys, florals, peacocks, and depictions of the wedding, and many brides conceal the groom's initials within the design. A popular folk belief holds that the darker the bride's mehendi develops, the stronger her marriage or her mother-in-law's love will be, though this is a lighthearted custom rather than a religious doctrine.

Mehendi is celebrated across Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh weddings in the subcontinent, with regional and community variations in style and significance. The event is typically informal and joyful, often held outdoors or in decorated home settings with bright florals and seating, and it has become a major part of the photographed wedding narrative.
