Sangeet

Originally a women-centric gathering rooted in Punjabi and North Indian custom, the Sangeet traditionally featured ladies singing wedding folk songs, often accompanied by the dholak drum, to tease and celebrate the bride and groom. Over time the ceremony expanded into a co-ed celebration embraced across many Indian communities.

The contemporary Sangeet typically includes rehearsed group dances performed by relatives and friends of both the bride and groom, frequently structured as a friendly competition between the two sides. Bollywood film music dominates the playlists, and many families hire choreographers in the weeks leading up to the event.

The Sangeet serves an important social function, mixing the two families in a relaxed, joyful setting before the more solemn wedding rituals. While it is most strongly associated with North Indian and Gujarati weddings, versions of musical pre-wedding nights now feature in celebrations across regions. It is one of the most production-intensive events of an Indian wedding, often requiring a dedicated venue, stage, lighting, and catering.
