The Vidaai is one of the most poignant moments of a Hindu and broader North Indian wedding, contrasting sharply with the celebratory mood of the preceding festivities. As the bride leaves, her family and the groom's family gather to bid her farewell amid an outpouring of emotion.

A common and symbolic ritual during the Vidaai is the bride throwing fistfuls of rice, coins, or puffed grains backward over her head toward her parental home.
