Aashirwad
Definition
Aashirwad (meaning "blessing") is a ceremony in which elders from both families bless the newlywed couple, typically held after the wedding or after the bride's arrival at the groom's home. Family elders place their hands on the couple's heads, sprinkle rice or flower petals, and offer prayers and gifts wishing them a long, prosperous, and harmonious married life. The ritual formalizes the acceptance and well-wishing of both families toward the new union.
Understanding Aashirwad
The Aashirwad ceremony centers on the central role of elders' blessings in Indian culture, where the goodwill and prayers of parents, grandparents, and senior relatives are believed to bring auspiciousness and protection to a marriage. The ceremony provides a structured occasion for these blessings to be conferred upon the couple together.
During the ritual, elders commonly sprinkle akshat (unbroken rice grains mixed with vermilion) or flower petals over the couple's heads, touch their heads in blessing, and present gifts of money, jewelry, or clothing. The couple, in turn, seek blessings by touching the feet of their elders, a gesture of respect known as charan sparsh.
The timing and form of the Aashirwad vary by community: in some Bengali and eastern traditions it is a distinct pre- or post-wedding event, while in many North Indian families it is woven into the welcome of the bride or the reception. Regardless of form, it underscores the family-centered nature of Indian marriage, in which the union is blessed and sustained by the broader family.
