Reception (Wedding Reception)

The reception is the principal social and celebratory function of an Indian wedding, distinct from the religious ceremony that solemnizes the marriage. While the core rituals may be attended by close family and friends, the reception accommodates a much wider guest list, including professional and social acquaintances.

A defining feature is the stage on which the newlywed couple sits or stands to receive guests. Attendees typically queue to congratulate the couple, present gifts, and pose for photographs, while a buffet or served dinner and live or recorded music run throughout the evening. In many families the reception is hosted by the groom's side, sometimes mirroring the walima in Muslim weddings, which is the feast hosted by the groom's family after the nikah.

Receptions vary from intimate dinners to large banquet-hall or hotel events with hundreds of guests, professional decor, and entertainment. Logistically, the reception resembles a large formal banquet and involves coordination of venue, catering, seating, and a master of ceremonies, making it one of the most production-intensive parts of the wedding.
