The engagement ceremony, known as sagai in North India and mangni in many Hindi-speaking and Muslim communities, is the formal ritual in which the bride and groom exchange rings and publicly commit to marry. It is distinct from the wedding itself and typically takes place weeks or months before the main ceremony. The engagement often includes the exchange of gifts between families, applying of tilak, and the announcement of an auspicious wedding date.

The engagement formalizes the union of the couple before the wedding and is frequently a larger, more celebratory event than the Roka, with extended family and friends in attendance. The central act is the exchange of rings, a custom widely adopted across Indian communities, accompanied by blessings from elders.
In Hindu tradition the engagement may include a small puja and the application of tilak to the couple, while in Muslim communities the equivalent gathering (sometimes called mangni) similarly involves ring exchange and gift-giving. The wedding date, often fixed according to an auspicious muhurat, is commonly announced at the engagement.
Modern engagements range from simple ring ceremonies at home to lavish receptions with catering, music, and decor rivaling the wedding reception itself.
