Sound Check
Definition
A sound check is a pre-event technical rehearsal where audio levels, microphone quality, and speaker system performance are tested and adjusted to ensure optimal sound for the audience. It involves testing each microphone, adjusting monitor levels for presenters, verifying playback systems, and identifying potential feedback or interference issues. Sound checks are essential for any event with amplified audio.
Understanding Sound Check
Sound checks should be scheduled well before the audience arrives, typically during the load-in or setup period. The audio engineer tests each input source individually: wireless and wired microphones, presentation audio, video playback, music systems, and any special audio elements. Levels are set for both the front-of-house speakers (what the audience hears) and the stage monitors or in-ear systems (what the presenters hear). The engineer also checks for feedback, dead spots in coverage, and interference from other wireless devices.
For events with multiple speakers, a representative sound check covers the range of expected voice types and presentation styles. Not every speaker needs to participate, but at least one person should test each microphone position. Musical performances and panel discussions require more extensive sound checks. The audio engineer should also prepare for contingencies: backup microphones, alternative input routing, and quick-fix solutions for common issues like feedback and wireless dropouts.
Examples
- 1
A conference audio team conducting a 90-minute sound check testing the podium microphone, two handheld wireless mics, a lavalier mic, and video playback audio across a 1,500-seat ballroom.
- 2
A band performing a 30-minute sound check before a corporate gala, adjusting monitor mixes, setting instrument levels, and running through key song sections.
- 3
A panel discussion moderator doing a quick sound check with all four panelist microphones to ensure consistent volume levels and no interference between wireless frequencies.
