Muhurat (Muhurtham)

The selection of a muhurat reflects the importance of astrological timing in Hindu tradition, where the alignment of celestial bodies is believed to influence the success and harmony of major life events. For weddings, the muhurat is one of the first practical decisions made after a match is agreed, as the entire schedule of events is planned around it.

The calculation draws on the panchang, the Hindu almanac, which tracks elements such as the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (constellation), yoga, and karana. Astrologers also consider the compatibility of the couple's birth charts and avoid inauspicious periods, which is one reason certain months and dates see a high concentration of weddings while others are avoided.

The muhurat can be a narrow window of minutes for the most critical rite (such as the saptapadi or mangalsutra tying), with the broader ceremony arranged so that the central act occurs at the precise auspicious moment. While most strongly associated with Hindu weddings, the practice of consulting astrologers for auspicious timing extends to many other South Asian ceremonies and milestones.
