Joota Chupai (also called joota churai, meaning "hiding" or "stealing the shoes") is a playful, light-hearted ritual in North Indian and Punjabi weddings in which the bride's sisters and female relatives steal and hide the groom's shoes after he removes them to enter the mandap. To retrieve his shoes, the groom must negotiate and pay a ransom, known as the neg, to the bride's side. The custom is a fun, competitive interlude that builds camaraderie between the two families.
