Kashi Yatra
Definition
Kashi Yatra is a symbolic and light-hearted ritual common in South Indian Hindu (particularly Tamil and Telugu Brahmin) weddings, in which the groom pretends to renounce worldly life and set off on a pilgrimage to Kashi (Varanasi) to pursue a life of spiritual study and celibacy. The bride's father then intervenes, persuading the groom to abandon the ascetic path, accept household life (grihastha), and marry his daughter instead. The ritual playfully dramatizes the groom's choice of married life over renunciation.
Understanding Kashi Yatra
Kashi Yatra enacts a stage of the traditional Hindu life framework, in which a young man completing his studies (brahmacharya) must choose between continuing as an ascetic or entering the householder stage (grihastha) through marriage. The groom theatrically begins his "journey" to Kashi, the sacred city associated with learning and liberation, carrying symbolic items such as an umbrella, a walking stick, a fan, and a copy of the scriptures.
As the groom sets off, the bride's father stops him and makes the case for married life, offering his daughter as a worthy companion and persuading the groom that the householder's path fulfills important duties (dharma). The groom relents and returns to the mandap to proceed with the wedding.
The ritual is enjoyed for its gentle humor and its affirmation of the value of married life within Hindu philosophy. It is a hallmark of South Indian Brahmin weddings, with regional and community variations in the props used and the manner in which the scene is performed.
