Event Feedback
Definition
Event feedback is the systematic collection and analysis of attendee opinions, ratings, and suggestions about their event experience. Feedback is gathered through post-session surveys, real-time reaction tools, post-event questionnaires, social media monitoring, and direct conversations. It provides organizers with actionable insights into what worked, what needs improvement, and what attendees want from future events.
Understanding Event Feedback
Event feedback is essential for continuous improvement but is only valuable when collected thoughtfully and acted upon systematically. The most common feedback challenge is low response rates: post-event email surveys typically achieve 15-25% completion. Strategies to increase participation include sending surveys within 24 hours of the event, keeping surveys short (5-7 minutes), offering incentives for completion, using mobile-friendly formats, and collecting feedback in real time during the event rather than only afterward.
Effective feedback surveys combine quantitative ratings (1-5 or 1-10 scales for overall satisfaction, content quality, venue, logistics) with qualitative open-ended questions (favorite session, biggest suggestion, likelihood to recommend). The Net Promoter Score (NPS), which asks "How likely are you to recommend this event to a colleague?" on a 0-10 scale, has become the standard benchmark for overall event satisfaction. Session-level feedback collected immediately after each session captures more accurate impressions than event-wide surveys sent days later.
Closing the feedback loop is what separates good organizations from great ones. Analyzing feedback data, identifying patterns, sharing insights with stakeholders, and visibly implementing changes based on feedback demonstrates that attendee opinions matter. Communicating changes to past attendees ("You told us X, so we're doing Y") builds loyalty and increases future response rates.
Examples
- 1
A conference sending a 3-minute post-event survey within 2 hours of the closing session, achieving a 45% response rate by offering early-bird registration discounts as incentive.
- 2
An event app prompting attendees to rate each session with a simple star rating and optional comment immediately as the session ends.
- 3
An organizer publishing a "You Said, We Did" report showing how feedback from the previous year's event directly influenced improvements in this year's program.
