What makes Gothenburg a sustainable event destination?

Gothenburg has topped the Global Destination Sustainability Index multiple times. The city runs on 100% renewable energy, has an extensive tram/public transport network, and venues like Svenska Mässan hold environmental certifications. Local suppliers prioritise sustainability, making it easy to plan certified green events.

Is the archipelago accessible for team-building events?

Yes. The southern Gothenburg archipelago is car-free and reachable by ferry in 30-90 minutes. Islands like Styrsö and Vrångö offer seafood restaurants, hiking, and kayaking. It's perfect for half-day or full-day excursions. Summer is ideal, but autumn and spring also work with proper planning.

What is the food scene like for event dining?

Gothenburg is Sweden's culinary capital with multiple Michelin-starred restaurants and a celebrated seafood tradition. The Fish Church (Feskekôrka) market, Magasinsgatan restaurant row, and west coast oysters are highlights. Event caterers draw on a strong local food culture that emphasises fresh, sustainable ingredients.

How far ahead should I book Svenska Mässan?

For large exhibitions and congresses, book 12-18 months ahead. Medium conferences (500-2,000) should book 6-12 months ahead. Smaller meetings can often be accommodated 3-6 months out. Check the venue calendar for major recurring events like EuroHorse and the Book Fair that consume full capacity.

Gothenburg's Event Profile

Gothenburg has built a remarkable reputation as one of Europe's most effective mid-size event cities. Svenska Mässan, centrally located in the heart of the city, is the Nordic region's leading exhibition and congress centre with 40,000 sq m of event space and direct connection to the 1,200-room Gothia Towers hotel complex, creating a seamless delegate experience.

The city consistently ranks as the world's most sustainable destination and attracts events aligned with sustainability, innovation, and responsible business. Gothenburg's manageable scale — large enough to offer diverse venues and dining, small enough for everything to be walkable or a short tram ride — makes event logistics straightforward. The local population's warmth and high English fluency create a welcoming atmosphere for international delegates.

Industry Strengths

Automotive and mobility events are Gothenburg's signature, with Volvo Cars, Volvo Group, and a dense supplier network headquartered here. Autonomous driving, electric vehicle, and sustainable transport conferences draw global audiences. Maritime and shipping events connect to Scandinavia's largest port and companies like Stena Line and Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

Life sciences events leverage AstraZeneca's major R&D centre and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital research complex. Clean tech and sustainability conferences thrive in a city that has halved its carbon emissions since 1990. Digital and tech events benefit from Lindholmen Science Park, a growing hub for AI, IoT, and mobility tech startups. Food and seafood events celebrate Gothenburg's west coast culinary heritage.

Access and Logistics

Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (GOT) offers direct flights to major European hubs and is 25 minutes from the city centre. Gothenburg Central Station provides direct trains to Stockholm (3 hours), Malmö/Copenhagen (3.5 hours), and Oslo (4 hours). The city's extensive tram network is one of Europe's best and connects all venue areas.

Hotels are concentrated around the central station, Avenyn boulevard, and Liseberg amusement park area. Gothia Towers' 1,200 rooms directly adjacent to Svenska Mässan make it Scandinavia's largest hotel complex. Room rates are moderate by Scandinavian standards, typically 20-30% below Stockholm. The compact city centre means delegate transport costs are minimal.

Seasonal Highlights

Summer (June-August) transforms Gothenburg with long daylight hours, outdoor restaurant terraces, and access to the stunning southern archipelago for boat excursions and seafood experiences. The city's Michelin-starred restaurants and food markets provide exceptional catering and networking dinner options.

Autumn (September-November) is prime conference season with strong business attendance. The Gothenburg Film Festival (January-February) and Way Out West music festival (August) create scheduling considerations. Winter events benefit from the Liseberg Christmas Market atmosphere and cosy Swedish fika culture. The city's manageable size means weather rarely disrupts logistics, and indoor venue quality is consistently high.
